Affordable housing is different throughout different housing markets in the US. What would be affordable housing in Phoenix would be different in a place like Des Moines. According to a new report from the Urban Land Institute, there has been very little home-building activity geared towards the middle-class price point. However, new evidence shows that many homebuilders are starting to respond to this gap in the housing market by building homes aimed at that growing and underserved middle-class market.
Homebuilders are now building master-planned communities, not just homes. In a recent article from Forbes, it states that “today’s home buyers don’t care about having four or five bedrooms. Instead, they would rather have amenities such as a restaurant, fitness center, farmer’s market or nature trail nearby.”
